If you have diabetes, you need medical insurance — and it may not be easy to get. Even if you have it, you may not be able to afford it for long, because your premiums are going to go up — drastically! If you have private insurance, your insurance company may even drop you when the policy comes up for renewal.

In 2005, the Kaiser Family Foundation released a report based on 14 months of study. The study focused on how Americans with diabetes have trouble obtaining and keeping affordable health insurance. The study involved 850 people, from all 50 states. The study was made possible and funded by the American Diabetes Association and several other foundations.

The study found that many insurance underwriters deemed diabetics as uninsurable. The fact is that insurance companies really don’t want to pay for the cost of diabetes — no matter how many years you have been paying them your premiums. If you are dropped by your insurance company, or have trouble getting insurance coverage at all, there are several things that you can do.

The first thing to do is to apply for any state programs that may assist you. While people should not generally be encouraged to take money from taxpayers, this is one way to get state and federal governments to wake up to the problems concerning insurance coverage and diabetes. When you want something done, you hit them where it hurts — in the wallet. Don’t feel guilty about it, either. You’ve tried to get insurance coverage — and the system didn’t cooperate with you.

In the meantime, make an appointment at your local free or low-cost health clinic. The doctors in these establishments are very caring. In fact, you may find that they care more about your health than the doctor sitting in that $100,000 office, wearing that $2,000 suit.

Finally, keep trying. Search online for affordable health insurance coverage, and contact your state representative. Also contact your local human resources office to find out what programs are available in your state.
